Effect of fluence on the discoloration of marble cleaned with UV lasers

چکیده
The effect of fluence level on the discoloration of marble surfaces after the removal of the encrustation by 355 nm laser pulses is comparatively studied. Considering the thermochemical reaction possibly occurring in the encrustation during laser irradiation, the mechanism responsible for the discoloration of the cleaned marble surface is analyzed. The reduction of iron oxides by graphite plays a key role in determining the final color of the cleaned marble surface. A two-dimensional laser ablative cleaning model including the reaction heat is applied to calculate the temperature distribution during laser heating. The kinetics of the thermochemical reaction is estimated based on the simulated temperature field. The occurrence of the thermochemical reaction is also verified indirectly with experiments. The marble surfaces before and after laser irradiation are characterized in terms of the chemical components through surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy. The surface color is measured with a chromameter using a 1976 CIE Lab color system. The proposed mechanism is also applied to numerically analyze the severe discoloration of marble cleaned with laser pulses at 1064 nm. # 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Role of marble microstructure in near-infrared laser-induced damage during laser cleaning
When marble is cleaned by nanosecond neodymium yttrium–aluminum–garnet lasers ~1064 nm!, strongly absorbing surface contaminants are removed at fluences substantially below the damage threshold for the much less absorptive marble substrate. Recent studies have shown, however, that unacceptable roughening of the marble surface also may occur at low fluences due to removal of individual grains. I...
متن کاملAn Evaluation of Laser Ablation Cleaning on Surficial Black Crust on Pennsylvania Marble: A Case Study of the Hood Cemetery Gate, Germantown, Philadelphia, PA
Black crust, or gypsum crust, is a surficial accumulation of atmospheric deposits in a gypsum matrix, which is often firmly bonded to the substrate. This condition is ubiquitous on marble buildings, not only threatening the historic fabric, but also leading to aesthetic damage. Laser ablation cleaning has become a popular method to remove black crust from masonry surface. This study focuses on ...
متن کاملThe discoloration of the Taj Mahal due to particulate carbon and dust deposition.
The white marble domes of the Taj Mahal are iconic images of India that attract millions of visitors every year. Over the past several decades the outer marble surfaces of the Taj Mahal have begun to discolor with time and must be painstakingly cleaned every several years. Although it has been generally believed that the discoloration is in some way linked with poor air quality in the Agra regi...
متن کاملDevelopment of monitored tunable biodosimetry for fluence validation in an ultraviolet disinfection reactor
The current biodosimetry, a primary fluence validation method for ultraviolet (UV) reactors, is confronting some serious challenges (e.g., the high cost and the lack of accurate monitoring of the lamp output), thus greatly limiting its practical application. In this study, a monitored tunable biodosimetry (MTB) was developed to validate the fluence of UV reactors with a lower cost but a higher ...
متن کاملModulation Response and Relative Intensity Noise Spectra in Quantum Cascade Lasers
Static properties, relatively intensity noise and intensity modulation response in quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) studied theoretically in this paper. The present rate equations model consists of three equations for the electrons density in the conduction band and one equation for photons density in cavity length. Two equations were derived to calculate the noise and modulation response. Calcula...
